Therapy with Hannah – Clinical Experience

Master’s Degree:

MA Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy for Children, Adolescents, and Families (Level 7)

University of Roehampton

Classification Achieved: Distinction

Over the span of my three-year master's programme, I acquired comprehensive skills and expertise geared towards positively influencing the emotional and psychological well-being of children and young people. This journey was guided by field-leading experts, ensuring a robust foundation rooted in pioneering research endeavours. The curriculum not only honed my cognitive, case conceptualisation, and ethical thinking skills but also provided practical insights into therapeutic work with young clients and their families.

Throughout my training, experiential learning was invaluable as it bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enhancing my clinical skills, self-awareness, and readiness for real-world therapeutic interactions. For example, in my first year of training, I engaged in a 20-week infant observation using the Tavistock model. This experience provided me with a unique opportunity to directly witness early developmental processes and gain profound insights into the foundational aspects of human relationships. Furthermore, in my second and third years, I undertook two clinical placements. These hands-on experiences allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, refining my ability to adapt therapeutic approaches across diverse developmental stages and environments. Through these placements, I cultivated essential therapeutic skills, built rapport with a variety of clients, and gained a nuanced understanding of the complex challenges faced by children and adolescents in different settings.

Overall, this clinical training programme has significantly enhanced my ability to establish meaningful therapeutic relationships, proficiency in addressing both conscious and unconscious dynamics within a therapeutic setting, and competence in working ethically and in a culturally competent manner. My training has underscored the significance of crafting empathic and effective therapeutic interventions, equipping me to creatively respond to intricate and novel situations within the dynamic realm of therapeutic work with children, adolescents, and their families. This experience equips me with a rich skill set and a deep understanding of contemporary therapeutic approaches, making a valuable addition to my professional profile.

Dissertation title: ‘Food for thought: A theory-building case study of brief humanistic therapy with an adolescent client experiencing eating difficulties.’ This paper was graded as a distinction and is currently in the process of being edited for publication.

Bachelor’s Degree:

Psychology BSc

University of Sussex

Classification Achieved: First-Class Honours (1st)

Over the course of my three-year Bachelor’s degree, I garnered a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted aspects of psychology. The curriculum covered core psychological principles, research methodologies, and various theoretical frameworks, providing a robust foundation in the field. While the programme encompassed diverse modules such as cognitive, social, and clinical psychology, there was a distinct emphasis on child and adolescent psychology, allowing me to delve into the intricacies of the psychological development of young minds. The program not only emphasized critical thinking and analytical skills but also encouraged the practical application of psychological concepts. Through engaging in coursework, presentations, research projects, and practical application of psychological concepts, I developed a nuanced appreciation for the complexities of human behaviour. Overall, this learning facilitated not only academic growth but also fostered a passion for lifelong learning in the dynamic field of child psychology.

Dissertation title: ‘The effect of disgust on clinical constructs associated with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).’
